Surplus Share
Community Fridge
Our Community Fridge began life as a Surplus Share Food Scheme in November 2015, supported by Huntingdon Market and local allotments. Since then, it has grown into a valued community resource, helping to reduce food waste while supporting local people.
In 2018, Godmanchester Food Bank provided us with a fridge, enabling us to safely store donated food from Greggs that required refrigeration. The Food Bank has also supported the scheme by referring people who may benefit from it.
We are incredibly grateful to the organisations that continue to support our Community Fridge, including Greggs in Huntingdon Town Centre and St Peters Road, Anglian Water, Co-op Godmanchester and the Co-op Cardinal Distribution Centre, Waitrose St Ives, Tesco Stukeley Meadows and Tesco Extra, Morrisons St Ives, as well as Huntingdon Markets and the Community Allotment.
The Community Fridge is open to everyone. There is no referral needed—simply take what you need and donate if you can. Food is shared on a “Take what you need, give what you can” basis.
We are committed to ensuring that no food goes to waste. Any surplus is also shared with Jimmy’s Cambridge to support people experiencing homelessness.
You are also welcome to donate surplus fruit and vegetables to share with others. Visit us each morning to see what has been collected from local stores—food that can no longer be sold but is still perfectly good to eat.
Together, we can reduce waste, support one another, and make the most of the food available in our community.
